A recent study found that the drug abuse of alcohol or marijuana is not as prevalent as the other drug abuse in the United States. The reason, apparently, is that the average American has more and more children to deal with. So there is a tremendous amount of confusion.
This is one of those studies that seems to have hit the media, but it has actually been done in a different way. A team of researchers at The University of Texas at San Antonio performed a study that found that people who drank alcohol were far more likely to abuse marijuana and that those who drank alcohol alone were about 90 percent less likely to abuse marijuana as a group.
The researchers had already tested a few hundred people and found that only one percent of people who drank alcohol alone were in fact alcohol abusers. So when they asked people who drank alcohol alone if they had ever been an alcoholic, only 14 percent were correct.
Of course, people who abuse alcohol are still alcohol abusers for a few reasons. First, alcohol is a depressant, so it makes people feel lethargic and tired. Second, alcohol makes people more likely to get drunker and, thus, more likely to be an alcoholic. Third, alcohol makes people more likely to smoke pot and so on and so forth.
